Adding layers to a tour

You can enrich your tour experience by adding layers, such as quizzes, surveys, and optional audio. These layers add depth and interactivity to the overall visitor experience.

Types of layers

Adding layers can serve a variety of functions, so before showing you how to build the layers, let’s look at a few reasons why you may want to. For example:

  • Additional Information: When your main audio fragment for a stop becomes lengthy, you can provide more detailed information by adding a layer. For instance, you can present historical background or details about an art piece as a separate layer. This way, visitors who are not as interested in the history can still enjoy the primary story of the art.

  • Quizzes: You may want to engage visitors with quizzes during the tour. Assigning scores to clips enables visitors to accumulate points as they progress. These points can be utilized at the end of the tour to generate a final score, which can be associated with a small reward like a cardboard medallion or coloring page. Quizzes are particularly effective for children's tours or if you wish to introduce a competitive element.

  • Surveys: Conducting a survey provides valuable insights about your audience, including their age range, travel distance to your site, and gender distribution. This information can help tailor your marketing strategy more effectively.

Adding layers

To add a layer to your tour, follow these steps:

  1. Click on a stop within the tour.

  2. Hover your mouse cursor over the clip, and a small "+" icon will appear.

  3. Click the "+" icon, and a new clip will appear with a line connecting it to the previous clip, labeled as "Auto play."

At this point, the layer has been added, and the purpose of adding the layer becomes relevant.

  • If you want to include an optional segment of audio, click the "Auto Play" dropdown button and select any of the available buttons. It's essential to provide an explanation in the first clip to guide visitors. For example, you can include text such as "Press the up button to learn more about the painter's life."

  • Quizzes and surveys typically require more than one option or button. To accommodate this, hover your mouse cursor over the new clip and click the "+" icon to the right of it. The lines connecting the clips will automatically change from "Auto play" to "left button" and "up button" for the left and right clips, respectively. You can include up to four options for visitors to choose from: left, up, right, and down buttons.

    • When clips are added in this manner, they are automatically grouped together, indicated by a grey outline surrounding them. You can click the group/ungroup icon to toggle between these states. Grouped clips share the outgoing connection, ensuring that the following clip remains the same regardless of the chosen option.

    • For additional layers, click the "+" button below a clip or group and repeat the process. Note that if you want to chain a clip group to another group, you need to include an "in-between" clip. This step is crucial to ensure proper advancement through the tour, otherwise the Podcatcher wouldn’t know which of the following clips it needs to play to advance..

  • Quizzes often involve scores. To enable scores, access a clip's settings and toggle on the "Enable scores" option. Use the dropdown menu to assign a score. If you prefer not to award points for wrong answers, toggle off this option. The assigned scores can be viewed in the clip overview after they have been added.

    • If you wish to allow visitors to retry answering a quiz question, enable the "Allow the visitor to replay the previous audio clip" option and select a method for them to do so. Note that visitors will not receive points if they answer a question incorrectly initially and then answer correctly after a retry.
