Installing IDentifiers

3 min readUpdated Nov 20264 steps

Visitors trigger content by pointing the Podcatcher Classic at an IDentifier. This page helps you place and mount IDentifiers so every visitor can reach them easily, and read a code you can no longer see.

  • Spacing — keep at least 30 cm between two IDentifiers.
  • Height — 130 cm from the ground works best for tall and small visitors, children and visitors in a wheelchair.
  • Orientation — mount them horizontally against a wall, cabinet or post.
  • Range — an IDentifier triggers a Podcatcher Classic within about 30 cm on average.

An IDentifier lying flat on a table is hard to trigger because of the angle. Tilt it towards the visitor, preferably at 45 degrees.

  • Make sure the label is attached correctly and firmly.
  • Mount the IDentifier upright, at a 90-degree angle.
  • Make sure rainwater can drain away from it.

Always test first. Thick glass can weaken the infrared signal, and a metal casing blocks it strongly.

Keep at least 30 cm between Start IDentifiers too. With several languages, hang them staggered diagonally, so a visitor does not accidentally start another language while bringing the Podcatcher Classic to their ear.

Not enough room for all your languages? Contact helpdesk@guide-id.com. The helpdesk can change a setting so you can place them closer together.

  • Screws — use the ears on the sides of the IDentifier.
  • Double-sided tape — also possible.

You can remove the ears by breaking them off from front to back.

Read the code when you cannot see the back

Section titled “Read the code when you cannot see the back”

If the IDentifier is already mounted and you cannot read the sticker, let a Podcatcher Classic read the code for you:

  1. While the Podcatcher Classic is still in the Dockingstation, press and hold the two left buttons (A and B) with both thumbs.
  2. Keep holding them and take the Podcatcher Classic out of the Dockingstation.
  3. When all three LEDs are solid, release the buttons.
  4. Aim the Podcatcher Classic at the IDentifier. It tells you the IDentifier code.

This also works to read the DIP-switch code of an AV-Sync box. The same steps put the device in Test Mode, see Podcatcher Classic LEDs.
