Synchronizing Podcatcher Classic
This page explains when published content reaches your Podcatcher Classic devices, how to start a sync yourself and how long a sync takes.
During a sync, the Sync Device (Syncbox or Syncconsole):
- downloads the latest published content and writes it onto the devices in the Dockingstations,
- collects the logs from the devices, for your analytics and to spot devices with errors.
The devices charge in the Dockingstations at the same time.
When does new content reach the devices?
Section titled “When does new content reach the devices?”After you publish, the content is written onto the devices at the next automatic daily sync. You can publish at any time — for example to add Stops, IDentifiers or a language to an existing tour.
Set the daily sync time to a moment when all devices are back in their Dockingstations, usually after opening hours. You set it per Sync Device or for the whole site, see Daily sync time.
Start a sync yourself
Section titled “Start a sync yourself”You do not have to wait for the daily sync. In the Platform, go to Hardware → Sync and:
- click Sync next to one Sync Device,
- click Sync all to sync every Sync Device on your site, or
- open a Sync Device and click Start Sync.
If the button is grayed out, a sync is already scheduled or in progress.
How long does a sync take?
Section titled “How long does a sync take?”A daily sync with no or few content changes takes a few minutes: it mainly collects logs and checks the devices.
A sync after a large change, and especially the first sync, takes much longer, because all audio has to be written onto every device:
- One minute of audio takes about one minute to sync per device. Count every language: a 30-minute tour in 3 languages is 90 minutes of audio, so about 90 minutes per device.
- Stereo audio takes about twice as long as mono.
- The devices in one Dockingstation sync one after another. A Dockingstation holds up to 10 devices, so with 1 hour of audio, a full Dockingstation needs about 10 hours.
- Dockingstations sync at the same time.
After that, each sync only writes what changed since the previous one, so it is much faster.
Check the result
Section titled “Check the result”On Hardware → Sync you can see per Sync Device whether its content is Up to date and when the Last Sync took place. For each device, go to Hardware → Podcatchers.
